news watch: American Apparel forced to fire 1/4 of its work force

Old news which appeared in the NY Times on September 29, 2009 but definitely worth reading:
American Apparel "is firing about 1,800 immigrant employees in the coming days — more than a quarter of its work force — after a federal investigation turned up irregularities in the identity documents the workers presented when they were hired. The firings at the company [...] have become a showcase for the Obama administration’s effort to reduce illegal immigration by forcing employers to dismiss unauthorized workers rather than by using workplace raids."

Custom Made Pants II

Yesterday evening I went to the fitting of my new tailor-made pants and I have to say that I was very happy. The design does need to be tweaked a little but they will turn out like I imagined them. Since they aren't finished yet I didn't take any pictures instead I would like to share with you some pics of another blogger who has a lot more experience with custom-made clothes. Meet Izzy of The Dandy Project and his great collection of custom-made clothes:

I love that floral shirt. And I'm so jealous when I think of what I could get custom made if the price-tag would be the same here (in Berlin) as it is in Manila (where Izzy used to live - he currently resides in Boston): a shirt - 20 USD, a jacket - 60 USD, pants - 18 USD, all inclusive of materials and labor. Do check out Izzy's Guide to Getting Things Tailor-Made which is really helpful if you haven't been to a tailor before. Izzy is also a genius at DIY-ing so take a look at his projects, too.

Custom Made Pants

On Monday I will go to the fitting of my second pair of custom made pants. I'm quite excited about it even though the pants I am getting made are nowhere near as stunning as Mimi's that she got made in Hong Kong (pictured on the right). Click here to read her witty account of her HK experience and go check out her vintage boutique. I guess many people think that getting custom made clothes is too expensive but if you find the right tailor it doesn't cost more than buying something a little more pricey off the rack and the huge advantage of course is that it will fit you perfectly. And instead of having to spend hours and hours (time = money) of trying to find the right fit, fabric and color the choice is yours. Since I picked an inexpensive wool blend my pants are only going to cost about 125 Euros. Mimi paid about 150 USD for the tailoring and with the cost for the fabric one pair added up to about 250 USD. I do think that one pair of pants that fits great is better than three with a mediocre fit, don't you agree?
