Fin

The Norwegian fashion label Fin was founded in 2006 by Nikolai Herlofsen, Eivind Ødegård, Nikolai Perwin and Norwegian-Finnish fashion designer Minna Hannila. Fin is a certified fair trade company that uses organic cotton, wild non-violent silk and organic baby alpaca: “Fairtrade certification is independent and ensures that ethical production guidelines are enforced by someone other than the fashion company,” says Herlofsen. FIN Fashion’s founders also travel to India to check production personally. “We want to ensure both that the products maintain high quality and that production is ethical. This means ensuring that workers are well paid, and that they enjoy good working conditions,” says Herlofsen. You can watch a video of Fin's spring/summer 2009 runway show on their website. Fin is on sale here, here, here, here (UK) and here (US).

Ignes

I am currently looking for the perfect everday bag. The one bag to replace all other bags - sort of anyway. So I googled "fair trade leather handbags" and found the Winner of the Most Socially Responsible Handbag category at the Handbag Designer Awards 2007:
IGNES Handbags from Uruguay were founded by sister and brother team Maria and Ignacio Estrada. "The brand is best known for its custom-made service, which gives you the chance to create your very own personalised handbag. Your handbag will be crafted individually with the finest materials. The leathers are handpicked by the IGNES co-founders with attention to detail, quality and individuality." "IGNES maintains high ethical standards of production and fair trade partnerships with the craftsmen and women who create each design." "The tanneries the brand works with have strict environmental policies." (quotes from www.ignesbags.com)
The bag I like best at the moment is the Sofia bag pictured on the left though I would probably choose black leather.

Made in Germany: Mey

As part of my research for Two for Fashion's wedding themed blog parade I wrote to a couple of underwear brands to find out more about their production. I am still waiting for answers from Agent Provocateur and Wolford. Here is the reply I got from Mey, a German underwear brand, that was founded in 1948 by the brothers Franz and Karl Mey: "Around 98% of the Mey underwear range is made in our own factories in Albstadt/Germany, Budapest/Hungary and Celorico/Portugal. Some dying processes are outsourced to other manufacturers in Germany and Austria. Our factories in Hungary and Portugal are led by a German team. Be assured that we meet and exceed social standards." Something that I find quite endearing about this company: they have a museum and an online database devoted to the evolution of the sewing machine. Mey is sold in several European countries - for a list of stockists check out their website.

While it's still cold and wet in Berlin and hard to imagine that spring or even summer will ever come I found a new fashion label that made me dream of sunny days spent at the beach. Bíbico was launched this year by Spanish designer Nieves Ruiz who studied fashion design in France and worked for retailers in the UK and Australia: "I now work with women in India and Nepal who manufacture my designs. I’m there for a few months each year. It is challenging but I am always amazed by the pride and effort that my new business partners put into their work." Bíbico's manufacturers are certified by the International Association of Fairtrade. Go check out this wonderful collection of designs that are just perfect for hot summer days spent doing absolutely nothing except having lots of fun.

Hall of Shame

I am feeling a bit vindictive today so I decided to introduce a new category for my blog: the hall of shame. Wherein I will denounce those corporations who use sweatshop labour to produce their clothes. I am aware that it's not easy to reach a sweatshop free production line but as long as clothing companies demand faster and cheaper production from their suppliers their "ethical" codes of conducts are just a farce:

Charity planning BANANA REPUBLIC protest over employees' plight (The Guardian, 20.03.2008)
Sweatshop Raided In Queens [GAP, MACY'S, VICTORIA'S SECRET] (Forbes, 23.7.2008)
Queens Factory Is Found to Owe Workers $5.3 Million (The New York Times, 23.7.2008)
Child sweatshop shame threatens GAP's ethical image (The Observer, 28.10.2007)
'GAP sweatshop children' saved in India raid (Telegraph, 30.10.2007)
PRIMARK linked to UK sweatshops (BBC, 12.1.2009)
Exposed: PRIMARK's fashion sweatshops that pay children just 60p a day (Daily Mail, 23.06.2008)
The sweatshop high street - more brands [PRIMARK, MOTHERCARE] under fire (The Guardian, 3.9.2007)
Revealed: TOPSHOP clothes made with ‘slave labour’ (The Sunday Times, 12.08.2007)

ESPRIT: Dieser Junge näht Ihr Hemd (Stern, 12.6.2007)
Report Mainz berichtet über H&M (ARD, 10.11.2008)
OTTO-Konzern: Kinderarbeit für den HEINE-Versand (Stern, 11.2.2007)
Kate-Moss-Kollektion [TOPSHOP] von ausgebeuteten Arbeitern produziert (Der Spiegel, 12.08.2007)

Organic Stereo

A very lazy copy and paste post this one but I am busy, busy, busy: "Organic Stereo is an independent ethical fashion label founded in 2008 by accomplished fashion designer Marie Rendina. [...] The overall look is feminine and metropolitan, with a sense of playfulness and vintage flair. [...] The cotton used for our Spring-Summer 08 collection was organically grown and spun in Turkey, everything else (knitting, dying, printing and manufacturing) made in Porto (Portugal), before being shipped to our warehouse in the UK. This considerably reduces the transport of goods and therefore its impact on the environment."
