Aura Que

"AURA QUE was established in 2008 by Laura Queening [...] All AURA QUE materials are sourced in Nepal and created directly in the country with local producers, in conjunction with The Nepal Fair Trade Group." The products are "manufactured according to IFAT fair trade guidelines" (all quotes from www.auraque.com). The bags as well as scarves and small leather goods can be bought in her online shop. I bought one of her Jogi bags earlier this year and used it all summer.

AURA QUE wurde 2008 von Laura Queening gegründet. Die Materialien für ihre Accessoires kommen aus Nepal und werden auch dort in Kooperation mit der Nepal Fair Trade Group von lokalen Produzenten weiterverarbeitet. Die Produkte werden unter IFAT Richtlinien hergestellt und können im Onlineshop gekauft werden. Ich habe eine Jogi Tasche gekauft und den ganzen Sommer getragen.

Elementum, Jux, Milch

Here's part II of my selection of personal favorites from the Key, the fair for "green", sustainable and fair trade fashion that took place in Berlin from the 1st to the 4th of July:

Elementum's Portuguese creator Daniela Pais explores the possibilities of turning a fabric tube into garments by placing cut-outs in strategic places. The fabric she uses is spun from leftover yarn rolls. Instead of a monotone cloth this results in thinly striped pieces of soft jersey. The Elementum pieces can morph from scarf to dress, from shirt to skirt, from jacket to trousers... Read more and watch a video interview here; a video of Daniela's performance at the Key is here.

Jux is a Dutch brand based in Amsterdam. They use luxe fabrics like silk and cashmere for their feminine designs. "The pieces are made by Nepali tailors in fair conditions from natural and local products. [...] The fashion designer, Jitske Lundgren, lives in Nepal to coordinate the process and to maintain fair trade standards." (quoted from Jux's printed press release)

Milch's designer Cloed Priscilla Baumgartner redesigns menswear into womenswear, a pair of pants is turned into a neckholder dress for example. The beauty of her pieces, besides looking great and being very wearable, is that you only realise the transformation upon a second glance. The realisation is both funny and strange - the Surrealists would have loved it. Milch fashion can be bought via www.styleaut.com or at Yppenplatz 5 in Vienna, Austria.

Zeit für Teil II meiner persönlichen Favoriten von der Key:

Die Gründerin von Elementum, Portugiesin Daniela Pais, hat sich mit den Möglichkeiten beschäftigt, einen Stoffschlauch durch strategisch plazierte Ausschnitte in ein Kleidungsstück zu verwandeln. Die Stoffe, die sie verwendet, werden aus übrig gebliebenen Garnrollen gesponnen. Statt eines einfarbigen Stoffes entstehen dünn gestreifte Schläuche aus weichem Jersey. Mehr über Elementum und ein Video-Interview gibt es hier; ein Video von Danielas Performance bei der Key hier.

Jux ist ein holländisches Label, das seinen Sitz in Amsterdam hat. Für die femininen Entwürfe werden luxuriöse Stoffe wie Seide und Kaschmir verwendet. Die Kleider werden von nepalesischen Schneidern genäht, die fair bezahlt werden und lokale Produkte verwenden. Die Designerin Jitske Lundgren lebt in Nepal, koordiniert die Produktion und achtet darauf, dass Fair Trade Standards eingehalten werden.

Cloed Priscilla Baumgartner, die Designerin des österreichischen Labels Milch, macht aus Herren- Damenmode. Eine Hose wird z.B. zu einem Neckholder-Kleid. Das Schöne an ihren Entwürfen ist nicht nur, dass sie gut aussehen und sehr tragbar sind, sondern dass die Verwandlung erst auf den zweiten Blick erkannt wird. Die Erkenntnis, um was es sich hier handelt, ist lustig und seltsam zugleich. Die Dadaisten hätten an Milch bestimmt ihre Freude gehabt. Komodo

Komodo was launched in 1988 by Mark Bloom so they have recently been "celebrating 20 years in business, still in one piece, still independent and still working with many of the same family run factories in Bali and Kathmandu that we started out with at the end of the 80's and early 90's" (komodo.co.uk). Komodo is a member of the MADE-BY organisation: "MADE-BY is an independent consumer label for fashion companies who continuously improve and are transparent about the social, economic and ecological conditions throughout the whole supply chain of their collections." Bíbico

While it's still cold and wet in Berlin and hard to imagine that spring or even summer will ever come I found a new fashion label that made me dream of sunny days spent at the beach. Bíbico was launched this year by Spanish designer Nieves Ruiz who studied fashion design in France and worked for retailers in the UK and Australia: "I now work with women in India and Nepal who manufacture my designs. I’m there for a few months each year. It is challenging but I am always amazed by the pride and effort that my new business partners put into their work." Bíbico's manufacturers are certified by the International Association of Fairtrade. Go check out this wonderful collection of designs that are just perfect for hot summer days spent doing absolutely nothing except having lots of fun.

Berlin ist immer noch regnerisch und kalt und der Frühling, ganz zu schweigen vom Sommer, scheint unendlich weit weg. Das neue Modelabel Bíbico der spanischen Designerin Nieves Ruiz lässt mich dagegen von sonnigen Tagen am Strand träumen. Nieves, die in Frankreich Modedesign studiert und danach für englische und australische Modefirmen tätig war, arbeitet jetzt mit Näherinnen in Indien und Nepal, wo sie mehrere Monate im Jahr lebt. Über Ihre Mitarbeiterinnen sagt sie: "Es ist eine Herausforderung, aber ich bin immer wieder voller Bewunderung über den Stolz und die Energie, die meine neuen Geschäftspartnerinnen in die Arbeit stecken." Die Produzenten von Bíbico sind WFTO zertifiziert. Ich kann euch nur empfehlen, diese Kollektion anzuschauen, die einfach perfekt für heiße Sommertage geeignet ist.
